What is Reiki?

Reiki is a japanese word which means “spiritual energy”.

What is the system of Reiki?

The system of Reiki is a Japanese method to heal the self and others.  Several elements make up the complete system of Reiki.  One element is the physical practice of Reiki for the purpose of healing and this can be incorporated to the work and therapy of children and adults with learning difficulties.

How can the system of Reiki be used for children with learning difficulties?

The system of Reiki can be used with children with learning difficulties by placing the hands of the practitioner over different parts of the body of the fully clothed student.  For children with autism, who can be over sensitive to touch, hand can be put over the body without actually touching it.  The effects of the Reiki methods will be the same and children might be more willing to accept it at the beginning.  However, it is important not to underestimate the very positive effects that the use of touch can have in people and its healing properties.

Where do Reiki sessions take place?

Reiki sessions take place in quiet areas where the student feels safe.  Students can lay on a massage table or a mat on the floor, wherever they feel the most comfortable.

During the Reiki sessions students will be helped to calm down and relax.  Calming music or essential oils can be used to create a calming atmosphere.

What happens during the Reiki treatment?

A Reiki session can last up to one hour.  However, with it is unlikely that students with learning difficulties will be able to cope with one hour long sessions so this can be reduced to as short as a necessary and repeated with more frequency.

During the session the practitioner might use specific hand positions over the major organs and important joints of the body to balance its different systems

Once you become a level II practitioner, you will have the added benefit of sending reiki remotely. I have found distance healing sessions to be as effective, and sometimes more effective than working hands-on.

Congratulations and good luck in your work with our differently abled kids.
